Talking Points:

The first tip is all about focussing your efforts, ensuring that your career search is concentrated on 20 or fewer organizations to guarantee that your time isn’t wasted on opportunities that aren’t fulfilling.

Secondly, building a network with valuable connections can open up opportunities for the future, especially when they are based in genuineness rather than being purely transactional.

Tip #3 suggests being authentic as this will allow for a natural fit between employer and employee to actualize while building relationships grounded in trust.

Tip #4 states, “be persistent, yet professional.” Some organizations include persistence as part of the screening process. Showing interest through persistence along with a professional tone can show an organization that you care.

Tip #5 encourages you to be selective about which job you’re willing to take to ensure the job you’re seeking is a good fit. Another thing to keep in mind is whether a job is safe or not, to offset the statistically higher probability that a new professional gets injured on the job.

Tip #6 encourages playing to your strengths, which can allow for a longer-lasting employment situation where loyalty is more likely. The seventh tip accentuates the importance of good communication, which includes always writing a one-page, succinct cover letter to accompany a resume or job application.

A well-written cover letter gives you a chance to introduce yourself to a company while expressing a genuine interest. Darrell states that in addition to a foundation of technical skill certifications and training, soft skills are a largely important asset to accompany technical knowledge.

Generally, all employers value and are looking for the qualities of sound judgment, being results-driven, and a team player while displaying positivity and the ability to work well with others. In a competitive world, these tips can help expedite the job search process and allow for the actualization of meaningful careers.

This webinar session is suitable for Junior to Mid-Career, students and job seekers.
