Talking points:

Career options in climate change include but aren’t limited to the fields of

  • policy & governance,
  • risk & mitigation,
  • communication & public awareness,
  • socio-economic impact assessment,
  • and air pollution & GHG.

Companies in these fields are looking for an increasing number of employees to fulfill vacant roles. Specific competencies and scope of knowledge are required to work in each field, as sustainability training is applied in various frameworks.

While hiring, some of the top things employers are looking for in their employees are experience and knowledge in policy & legislation, industry, sustainability, site assessment and climate change.

In regards to interpersonal skills, problem-solving, communication and leadership scored highly in their level of demand.

ECO Canada supports career development. One of the ways this is done is through their Environmental Professional (EP) designation. EP is Canada’s only national environmental designation and becoming a certified environmental professional shows recognition of your environmental expertise and gives you access to a community of over 3,000 EPs for networking and mentoring opportunities. There’s an EP designation for whatever stage of your career you’re at and EPS specializes in certain industries in line with the skills and competencies laid out by the NOS (National Occupational Standards). Employees from a wide range of fields occupy the EP community. Some work directly with climate change, while others do so indirectly.

ECO Canada partners with Royal Roads University to provide advanced education and training for those in the industry. This partnership led to the development of the Canadian Centre for Environmental Education (CCEE), through which three programs have been created to assist students in their professional careers.

These programs include a Graduate Certificate in Science & Policy of Climate Change, a Master’s in Environmental Practice (MA/MSc) and a Bachelor’s in Environmental Practice (BA/BSc). They are offered online, in a blended setting (online and on-campus), and on campus. The courses within the offered programs are geared towards training for both current and future roles in climate change, in acknowledgment of an ever-evolving and growing field.

Through these programs and a growing community, ECO Canada seeks to aid new or continuing professionals in the climate change field build their skills and advance their careers.
