Based in Toronto, the owner of Partners Packaging has been in the packaging industry since 2002 and over the years has helped many organizations solve an array of packaging problems across multiple packaging formats. Most of his career has been in flexible packaging which is primarily plastic-based packaging, stand-up pouches, flat-bottom bags, large-format bags and roll stock.

These days, with more organizations becoming environmentally aware for myriad reasons—including the fact that their Millennial markets are demanding greener options—sustainable packaging is often the most viable business choice. For Treliving, a sustainable package is one that is economically viable, has most of the characteristics of the current package and is the best choice for the environment. “If you believe as I do that the solution to sustainability is a circular economy, then the packaging should be fully recyclable”. In a circular economy, what we take from the earth, we shall make sure that we take the best possible care of that resource and use it to the best of our ability as many times as humanly possible before we trash it. Treliving notes that almost all flexible packaging made today is not recyclable, but with a few exceptions most could and should be.

But when organizations are considering making the move to environmentally friendly packaging, various issues and intricacies must be considered that only a packaging pro as seasoned as

Treliving could understand and explain. “I can supply customers bio-based, recycled content or any of the options out there. As there is no true silver bullet, we discuss all of the pros and cons to each “solution” so that they have the best information possible with which to align their brand for the future.”

Treliving sources packaging for an array of industries—everything from proteins to nutraceuticals - but the bulk of his client base is of the animal-loving variety. “Pet food packaging is arguably the second-most challenging package format. “When you consider Dogs are 15,000 times more sensitive to anything than humans are, and with all of the distribution and retail challenges associated with a 30 lb bag the packaging needs to be right every time” he says. Treliving’s business spans the globe, with customers from Australia, Asia, and Europe to across North America, matching supply chains from Asia, Europe and North America.

As a packaging consultant, Treliving works with packaging engineers or other decision-makers to find out what their objectives and demands are, to advise the client of all the options available to them whether that be conventional to recycled packaging, bio-based or degradable. From here, Treliving is able to tap into his database and provide options for his client. “I don’t have one solution,” he says. “I have every solution because I don’t work for one company. I work for the customer and find the company that best suits their needs, which is why I deal with several companies.”

For decision makers who are thinking about changing up their packaging materials or format, or who want to make a move towards more sustainable packaging, Treliving says the time to make a change is now. “It’s important that companies know that the solutions they are seeking are available today. Technology in making flexible packaging has come so far in the last 18 months. I can find exactly what they’re looking for, and I can do it today.”
