In 1881, Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder, began making cotton-filled mattresses for his friends. From this humble beginning in Sealy, Texas, he went on to invent the machine that compressed cotton for use in mattresses. His mattress became so popular that he sold patent rights to other markets. The company “Sealy” was then established.
