The Center for Building Knowledge (CBK)

Service Provider in Newark, New Jersey

The Center for Building Knowledge (CBK) was established in 1988 with support from the State of New Jersey and was originally known as the Architecture and Building Science Group. At its inception, the Group's research focused on building technology, educational facilities and housing. In the early nineties, this focus expanded to include health care and aging, historic preservation, developmental disabilities planning, and infrastructure research. The emphasis throughout was on developing practical, research-based guidance that would help individuals and communities improve quality of life. This tradition continues at CBK today, where the focus has narrowed - to five research programs instead of seven - and the depth has expanded. The result is a well-established center with a proven track record - a center that develops credible resources for, and provides unique skills to, its local, regional and national clients. The mission of the Center for Building Knowledge (CBK) is to create new knowledge that will help individuals and communities make better-informed decisions concerning the built environment. The Center engages in a comprehensive program of applied research, technical assistance and training focused on the built environment and the institutions, policies, technologies and trends that shape it. A key goal is to generate practical research results that provide tangible benefits to individuals and the communities in which they live and work.
