Sakuma Brothers Farms, Inc.

Producer in Burlington, Washington

Sakuma Brothers Farms is an 85-year-old family business run by the fourth generation of the Sakuma Family. The family originally settled on Bainbridge Island and farmed as their sole source of income. In those early days, they would travel by ferry to Seattle to sell strawberries and other fruits and vegetables at Pikes Place Market and at the terminal markets. In 1935, the second generation of the Sakuma family moved to the Skagit Valley to begin farming strawberries and support the remaining family members who were still living on Bainbridge Island. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, six of the eight Sakuma brothers served in the U.S. Army while the remaining Sakuma family members were evacuated to internment camps in California.
