As a Home Inspector, my job is to help protect people's hard-earned money by helping them to know more about their home including all the various systems and components in it. Most people think that my role is to merely identify the defects in a home, i.e. the things that are wrong with the house. However, I also take the time to point out the various good things I find during home inspections as well. When I do find things that are broken, nearing the end of their useful life, or are safety hazards, I use the opportunity to explain the problem and possible solutions that the client may have as choices. I use this as a way to introduce them to more modern and environmentally-friendly options for the various components in their home including:
- more efficient insulation materials to not only save them money but to reduce their environmental impact and improve their "green footprint"
- safer electrical components such as AFCI/GFCI to improve their safety and avoid electrically-induced fire hazards
- replacing aged smoke or carbon monoxide detectors and/or adding additional detectors to improve their family's safety
- more efficient plumbing components such as faucets and toilets that use less water
