Eco-Freako and Hankettes
Retailer in Roberts Creek, British Columbia
It's hard to believe 20 years have passed since we first started Eco-Freako and Hankettes, and then when we uprooted our family back in 2001 from our comfortable urban lifestyle in Vancouver to move to the Sunshine Coast, build our own house, and continue homeschooling our children on our farm in Roberts Creek, people thought we were crazy. We knew it was the right move for our family, so we settled on our farm up in the woods and refurbished a 40-foot semi-trailer to serve as the base for our company Hankettes which we started in our Vancouver basement 5 years earlier.
Our first product was reusable organic cotton handkerchiefs that were inspired by Lesley's allergies. And again people thought we were mad. Why would we make reusable hankies? People wouldn't need to keep buying them. They said it was a bad business idea.
Fast forward 20 years and here we are still standing strong. We are still a "Mom and Pop" operation; Lesley personally sews all our organic cotton products. Sustainability is no longer a dirty word and the world has finally realized we need to stop our consumerist "throw away" lifestyle and become more aware of the heavy footprint we are leaving on Mother Earth, by adopting a more earth-friendly approach of reusing.
