I have always had an interest in nature, and living with the earth instead of on the earth. There are many things we can do as individuals to limit the negative impact of our lifestyle on the earth. My wife and I live in South Texas; but we have lived and traveled in many different places. We have lived in many types of housing adjusting to the local customs in regards to heating and cooling needs. Here in south Texas cooling and to some extent moisture control are of interest to everyone. I am constantly evaluating my home in terms of its energy efficiency and feel that an energy rating will be in order. We have taken some steps that anyone can do to limit their use of energy and natural resources. We installed low flow showerheads; new toilets, energy efficient appliances and we recycle just about everything. We can easily miss 3 weeks of garbage pick-up and not have an over flow of garbage. We keep some kitchen scraps in the freezer until garbage day to control smell and pest; the other we put in a compost bend in the yard. We also take paper and magazines to the school recycling dumpsters and the city picks up the glass, plastic and cans. This personal concern for the environment has influenced my view of real estate. I look for those builders and consumers who want to make a difference. There are many opportunities to better use energy and natural resources in new construction and in remodeling. I will use the knowledge and understand I have of green building and environmental issues to advise my clients and show them they do have choice. I hope to be able to communicate to a client that being green does not mean a drastic change in lifestyle and in most cases very little change at all.
