In 2006, Dr. Kevin Berner, Dr. Richard Sayre, and Mr. Robert Polak used their respective experience in manufacturing, molecular biology, and technology development to identify the opportunities, crucial technologies, key individuals, and research resources needed to develop and commercialize algae-based renewable biofuels. Phycal was formed, novel key technologies were licensed, and we began building our own intellectual property portfolio. Soon thereafter, tapping Dr. Sayre’s experience as a distinguished cassava expert, we began development of non-food cassava as a source of low-cost sugar when it was apparent that other sources of sugar were not appropriate as feedstocks in our ethanol and algae operations. Today, we continue to build an integrated advanced biofuels company.
